Why shale stabilisation matters.

Reactive shale can absorb water, swell, disperse or weaken when exposed to water-based drilling fluids. These interactions can contribute to unstable borehole conditions, solids loading and operational difficulty.

Shale stabilising additives are selected to reduce fluid–shale interaction through mechanisms such as coating, sealing, physical plugging and chemical inhibition.
